Backing Ethical Tourism

China has stepped up its pursuit of tourism sustainability with the endorsement of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Global Code of Ethics for Tourism by 10 top Chinese tourism enterprises during the China International Tourism Forum 2014, which took place at Kerry Hotel Pudong yesterday.

The tourism enterprises included Shanghai Spring International Travel Services, China International Travel Service, China National Travel Services (Holdings) Hong Kong, Beijing Tourism Group, Jin Jiang International Holdings and Shanghai Ctrip International Travel Service, among others.

According to Wang Shuo, representative of the UNWTO, this code seeks to maximize tourism’s socio-economic contribution while minimizing its possible negative impacts.
He said: “By signing this code, China will prove its leadership in this very important area of sustainability.
“These companies are committing themselves to observing the principle of respecting human rights, culture and heritage, and protecting the environment,” added Shuo.

For example, in adherence with the code, tourism activities should be conducted in harmony with the attributes and traditions of the host regions and countries and in respect for their laws, practices and customs.

Tourism stakeholders and tourists themselves should observe the sociocultural traditions and practices of all people, including those of minorities and indigenous people, and recognise their worth, Shuo added.
